Pale with fear, and holding on for her life, Cherise forced Dartanian into La Femme, who was startled by a raccoon in the path, suddenly rearing her head and slamming Francois backwards into a large, low tree branch knocking him off his horse. His foot caught in the stirrup and La Femme dragged him for several meters until his boot came loose, flipping him over on to the ground. She turned and walked Dartanian past Francois' body, which lay motionless on the ground, face down, helmet torn off with blood dripping out of his ear. He did not appear to be breathing. Storm clouds were rolling in with the fierce Mistral wind turning the sky black. Lightning crackled nearby shattering her ears. Could she get back to the castle in time?
