At the Denham Town Police station, a small, 12’ x 8’ jail cell housed twenty-two inmates, and it was as hot as a blast furnace. Darkness covered the entire room except for the few rays of light that leaked through from the security booth, where electricity stopped. The reeking combination of body odor, a broken toilet bowl, and marijuana smoke made it very malodorous to say the least. I thought to myself, This must be the waiting room where we wait to meet with Satan.
Shortly after the big iron door clanged shut behind me, an inmate approached me with accusatory remarks. As he inched closer to me he yelled, “You are a informer! You goin’ to dead tonight, bwoy.” His country twang was raw and laced with venom.
The only thing Jamaicans hates more than homosexuals are informants. With such an abominable label I’d be lucky to survive a night in a place like that. I backed away without saying a word to avoid a confrontation or a potential carnage. As he inched closer I heard the distinct sound of a ratchet knife being opened.
