Self-help books are the perfect vehicle for imparting your knowledge and expertise about a subject area to the general public.
In 1987, after going through a divorce, establishing a career, and raising five kids, I decided to escape from everyday life and travel around the world.
During the trip, I had some of the most wonderful and exciting experiences of my life.
I toured Egypt and South Africa. On the way to a Mount Everest base camp, our party was almost buried by an avalanche. I lived with the Sherpas at Katmandu. And I even fell in love.
I thought, 'Wouldn't this make a great book?' I could tell readers, especially women, about aspects of life that were really important to me. And I could encourage them to take risks at any age, and help them realize that romance and excitement don't have to end with your youth.
When my book Madam, Have You Ever Really Been Happy was finished, I sent it out to agents. No one responded.
Then I discovered self-publishing and iUniverse.
I decided to give it a try, and I wasn't disappointed. The staff at iUniverse was great. They assigned a representative to walk me through the entire publishing process. Everyone at iUniverse was so cooperative—they took all the pain and agony out of publishing.
Now my book is out and it's doing well. It's even gotten some really good reviews.
I'm glad I took the risk to publish with iUniverse. I always tell people that if you don't take a little risk now and then, you fall into a rut. And the only difference between a rut and a grave are the dimensions.
