What is the STAR Program?

The STAR Program is the highest and most sought-after designation among iUniverse authors. Those authors who have achieved high levels of editorial and bookselling success will reap the benefits similar to those of traditionally published titles.

How can my book qualify for the STAR Program?

To qualify for the STAR Program, your must follow these five steps:

Step 1: You must publish your book with a publishing package that includes STAR Program eligibility.

Step 2: If your book meets high editorial standards, it will receive the Editor's Choice designation, which is a prerequisite of the STAR Program. Only titles that earn Editor's Choice, which recognizes commercial-quality book content, are eligible for the STAR Program.

Step 3: A title must sell 500 copies, with at least 250 of those titles sold through traditional retail markets, or 5,000 e-books sales for titles published in 2014 or later in order to be considered for admittance into the STAR Program. This shows us that you have developed an enthusiastic following by selling a solid number of books through retail channels. Just as traditionally published authors demonstrate marketability through retail success, self-published authors must also have a proven ability to target a book-buying audience and reach that audience using methods beyond direct sales.

Step 4: iUniverse will notify you when you qualify for STAR status, and ask you to complete the STAR Program Marketing Questionnaire (see the FAQ below for more information about the questionnaire).

Step 5: The iUniverse STAR Board will consider your application. iUniverse will invite you into the STAR Program only if it is deemed by the STAR Board that further investment will help you receive broader recognition and greater commercial success.

How can I help my book receive the STAR Award?

The best way to help your book is to be enthusiastic about it and market, market, market. You know your book better than anyone else, so you have to be its number one advocate. Make sure friends, family, work associates, acquaintances, local media, store owners, book clubs, libraries and local writing clubs know your book is for sale and know how to order it.

Once I have sold 500 copies or 5,000 e-books, how will I be notified that my book is being reviewed for the STAR Program?

Once your book has sold 500 copies or 5,000 e-books, the Recognition Programs Department will notify you and deliver your application materials via email. If you believe your book qualifies for the STAR Program, but you have not received notification, please contact iUniverse Customer Support either by phone at 1-800-AUTHORS (288-4677) or by email at customersupport@iuniverse.com.

Will I receive guaranteed placement in bookstores as a STAR Award winner?

STAR does not guarantee placement in retail stores; however, we will present your title to retail buyers who will judge your commercial viability based on marketing plans, previous sales history and overall genre popularity.

My book is supposed to receive a new ISBN. What is this and how does it affect my book?

The ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a way of coding a book. It is industry standard and serves as a way to distinguish your book. Creating a new ISBN will remove the previous printing of the book and allow only the STAR edition to be purchased.

Will my cover be redesigned if it earns the STAR Award?

Any revisions to the cover will be done in order to meet industry standards. If you are satisfied with the cover and the STAR Board deems it is acceptable, no changes will be made.

The contract states that I will be featured on the main page of the iUniverse bookstore. Will I know when I am featured? Is there a method to how STAR titles are featured?

The featured books are updated at the beginning of every month. The STAR Board typically highlights book topics relevant to current events or the season. You will be notified via email when your book is featured.

What is a Foreword Clarion Review?

A Foreword Clarion Review is a 400-500 word critique written by one of the professional freelance reviewers employed by Foreword Magazine. iUniverse’s Foreword Clarion Review service gives you the opportunity to have your title reviewed by one of the most prominent and respected book review publications in the publishing industry.

You can use the review in your press kit, back-cover endorsement or on your website. With your approval, the review will also be available at www.forewordmagazine.com and archived with the top three title-information databases: Bowker's Books In Print®, Baker & Taylor's Title Source 3, and Ingram Book Company's iPage®. These online databases are used by booksellers and librarians who make purchasing decisions.

What kind of questions are on the STAR Program Marketing Questionnaire?

As part of the application process, we require STAR contenders to complete the Marketing Questionnaire, which will evaluate an author’s answers to the following questions:

  • Does your book have fresh, innovative content and style?
  • Is your book in a genre with high sales potential?
  • Do you understand your book's target audience and know how to reach it?
  • Have early sales levels proven that your marketing techniques are indeed effective in reaching that audience?
  • Are you willing and able to continue to generate customer demand for the title with support from iUniverse?

Will I receive help completing my Marketing Questionnaire?

You will not receive help filling out your Marketing Questionnaire since the STAR Board wants an unaffected description of your marketing plan. We can, however, provide a sample Marketing Questionnaire upon request, but only once STAR Program qualifications have been met.

What does it mean when you present my book to other companies for consideration?

My original publishing package already included one of the benefits listed for The STAR Program. Why am I receiving this service again once I qualify for the STAR designation?

Because we only award the STAR status to authors and books that have already published a book and proven their retail success, we must re-publish the book with a new publishing package. Therefore, even if you already received perks in your original publishing package, your re-published book will receive all of the benefits listed above. Think of it as a free publishing package upgrade for your book once it receives the STAR designation.

Please note that if your original publishing package included a Foreword Clarion Review, your re-published book will not be reviewed again unless more than 40% of the content has changed per Foreword’s policy. The iUniverse STAR Board will work with you to find an alternate marketing service if your re-published book does not qualify to be reviewed again.
