Marketing Your Book

Public Relations

Obtaining free, earned media through an organized public relations campaign is an effective way for promoting your book to the reading public. Some things to consider when planning a public relations strategy:

  • What are your objectives for your public relations efforts? Do you have certain audiences that you want to reach? A certain media outlet or reporter?
  • Research is power. Understanding who your targeted audience is important, as is understanding which reporters like to cover what topics.
  • How will you seperate yourself from the pack? Reporters get hundreds of pitches a week. Is there something about your book that is timely? Reflects a trend? Unique?
  • Expand your audience. Don't just target reporters who cover books or the publishing industry. Is your book about gardening? Then target a horticulture outlet. Think outside the box when considering journalist to whom you will pitch your book.
  • Be persistent, but not annoying. Journalists and reporters have to do their jobs. Don't call the same reporter day-after-day-after-day-after-day. That is the quickest way to ensure that he will NEVER even consider a segment or story about it.
