Everything stopped. Voices deep in conversation halted. Everyone looked at Gertie. She was sobbing, with tears streaming down her face. Mac sprinted from the back deck, through the open sliding glass door, to Mags who was now standing with her arms around Gertie. “What’s wrong, Gertie?” Mac cried out in panic, looking at Gertie’s pale, distraught face.“Steve; it’s Steve! He’s missing. I just know something terrible has happened to him,” Gertie cried out hysterically. Mac put an arm around Gertie and motioned for her to sit down again and asked, “Can you tell us what happened?” Through her tears and hiccups, Gertie sobbed out the story haltingly, “I just talked to the Venice airport traffic control officer. He called Birmingham and Steve didn’t arrive there. The traffic control officer on duty checked the log and they lost contact with Steve’s plane only minutes after it left Venice. Steve didn’t follow the flight plan he had registered. He veered off course less than a hundred miles out and they lost contact with him. What’s happened? Did he crash? Where is he?” “Calm down, Gertie. I’m sure he’s OK,” as Mags gently stroked Gertie’s back, trying to reassure her step-mother and herself.

About the Author
Charles P. Frank is a pseudonym for a husband and wife team, Ken and Pat Birt, in Florida, and their good friend, Dr. F. Belton Joyner, Jr. in North Carolina. Separately, the authors have published a number of other books in the genres of memoir, history, and theology. Together they have written and published seven Mac and Maggie Mason Mysteries. Dr. Joyner has written and published United Methodist Questions, United Methodist Answers and Being United Methodist in the Bible Belt among many others. Ken is a native Texan, attended North Texas University and Duke University. He has served as a United Methodist minister and business owner and manager. Pat is a native Missourian and has worked as an Administrator in a number of successful companies. Dr. Joyner holds degrees from Duke University and Drew University and is also a United Methodist minister.
