Another time we had a moment with candy was once when we were taking the ferry to Dauphin Island in Mississippi. We took this ferry often when we travelled to the Gulf Coast, so this time I had prepared to allow the girls the fun of feeding the seagulls with bread on the ride over. Once again I remained in the car as Steve and the girls walked around the ferry, feeding the seagulls. Sloan, in her attempt to fling the bread high, hit her hand on the railing and immediately started screaming in pain. She ran over to where I was sitting in the car, and attempted to receive my sympathy by opening my door so that I could give her a much-needed hug. I had forgotten that I had placed a huge bag of hard candy that I had brought, and when she opened the door the entire bag of candy spilled out onto the surface of the ferry. Upon seeing this happen, Steve yelled across the ferry, “Get the candy, Nan, pick it up!” as he worried that someone might step on it, and fall. Sloan was wailing about losing the ”precious” candy as well as still crying over her injury, Hunter was appalled that her parents were calling loudly to one another across the ferry about candy, and Steve was concerned that someone might slip on the candy and then sue us for their injuries. Me? I was doing what I usually do in these types of situations; I was laughing without self-control! We had managed to turn a simple ferry ride into a circus act! This is referred by us as The Candy Fiasco.

About the Author
Nancy Wasson Wayland is family oriented, a lover of life, and a firm believer in God. She lives in rural Arkansas, not far from where she was raised, and relishes the time spent with family members. To say her life has not turned out the way she imagined that it would is an understatement. Adamant in her admission that she would not change anything about her life thus far, Nancy has taken the diagnoses of MS and Breast Cancer to help others who may be struggling with their own hardships, showing them that there is always something for which to be grateful!
