They stood facing each other, silhouetted against the fading sunlight; the sun glinting off each of their blades with frustratingly transient, but flawless brilliance. One blade purple, the other silver. Each one tired from the day’s battle, they locked their eyes on one another. One stood tall, easily towering 5 inches over the other. His stance steady and strong, yet neutral: neither aggressive nor defensive. It gave nothing away save that he was ready for whatever was next. The other’s stance was confused and tired. His feet were in a strange balance. Had a strong wind blown, he might have fallen. Nevertheless, he hoped that the sound of the conch would end the day’s battle before he had to face his foe: one he knew he could not defeat. His eyes gazed tiredly at the other, squinting ever-so-slightly from the almost-setting sun, sweat beading and dripping from his brow. The other seemed insanely calm, and an eerie silence had befallen them both in this moment of transition from day to night. He knew now that the other knew what he was doing, what he was waiting for. The stillness began to drive him mad, as he realized then that this man would not let him reach his goal. He had no choice but to fight, for as infinite as the seconds that passed seemed, there were many of them left before the sun would be gone and the conch would set him free. Without thinking, he sprang forward with energy that he hadn’t realized he had. His sword was coiled behind him, ready to strike at his foe, no matter his size or strength. He swung wildly and with all the skill and strength that his tired body would allow. He felt his sweat fly with his sword as he felt every single one of his attacks thrown aside as though his sword were a blade of grass. Then, without warning, his arm felt lighter than it had before. Before he could realize that his sword was no longer in his control, he felt a sharp, but strange, pressure in his abdomen. When it abated, he fell to his knees, looking down at his hand: a liquid that looked black in the absence of light covered it, while to his side, he saw his other arm lying dead on the ground in a black pool. He finally looked up into the death that he faced now and knew that the conch could no longer save him. The glimmer of the purple-hued blade caught his eye from his fading periphery for a fraction of a second. And then: darkness…

About the Book
The Tera-Ninja are a race of super humans genetically engineered to be the perfect warriors. Killian Tiwari was born in Washington, DC, the son of immigrant parents from Guyana. After graduating from law school, he became a consultant and an entrepreneur and, in the process, pursued his old hobby-turned-passion of writing. He currently lives in the Washington, DC, area. Children of the Fallen Empire is his first book.
