Out of the Fire & Into the Light

He pulled the rifle back and thrust it as if to impale me with it. I braced for the impact. With such force, he lunged towards me. The barrel somehow went right under the crook of my arm, through the couch, and through the wall of our trailer, coming out the other side of the wall. It was not by chance that the barrel had missed me; I believe that God had deflected the gun. For the moment I breathed a sigh of relief. I know that He was right by my side through this whole ordeal, keeping me calm, quiet, and most importantly, alive, although many times throughout the night, I wondered if that would be the outcome. Throughout the long night, Bob screamed, “We are both going to die, and the boys will become wards of the state! How would you like that?” I honestly thought that I would never see the boys again, but at the same time I was glad that they were not here to witness this. It was approximately 11:00 P.M. and pitch black outside. Bob noticed a patrol car pull up. Two deputies came knocking on the door. Bob quickly shut off the lights to the house and ordered, “Be quiet.” He then said, “This is it. We are all going to die, including those two officers, all because of you.”
