Commander Niko, also known throughout the recognized universe as Niko the Great, had concluded from past experience that there was only one way to destroy the Quantglots now pursuing his spaceship: he had to splatter them on the moon, the closest heavenly body to his ship. There was no hope of negotiating with the Quantglots to a reasonable peace treaty thus avoiding war. Though brilliant in their conquests of sub-sectors 7 through 11 in string 119, they were simply too brutish, ignoring all signals of civility and friendship. They were also acknowledged by all thinking beings of the several flip-flopped universes on the cosmic map as being the ugliest entities in existence: formless gelatinous blobs of pulsating green energy. There were four Quantglot ships fast closing in on him and he had no other choice but to destroy the intruders; earth was at stake. Knowing that the Quantglots were vampire fearful of stellar light (they always did their dirty work within the confines of dark matter), he first manoeuvred them to the dark side of the moon. He then made a sharp bank circling back as soon as he had circled around to the sunny side of the moon, steadied his alpha-xeroid laser canons, and splattered the Quantglot ships, one at a time, as they, half-blinded, and half-wittingly entered the sun filled side of the moon. “Like shooting fish in a barrel,” smiled Niko, apologizing to the fish.

George P. Matheos has written poetry and short stories and has published two novels. He divides his time between Greece, where he lives with his wife, Victoria, and Southern California. Matheos also enjoys painting and taking care of a small olive grove near Nafplion, Greece. Pure Magic was written for his six grandchildren.
