A Big House for Little Men

Cody was twelve years old, growing up in an all Irish Dorchester neighborhood, in the city of Boston. He lived in the ghetto and learned at an early age about real life. Not only was he exposed to the streets and crimes that existed within this city, he learned the real meaning of “life on the streets.” Cody wanted one thing; he wanted to succeed and strived to get there. Most kids in the ghetto had three choices in life, either to become a priest, a cop, or a criminal. Cody chose the latter of the three because he loved the streets. It was in his blood at an early age from running wild. With no stable family life, he chose to become a part of the street society. He roamed day and night. He hated just about everyone and never trusted a single sole. He hated going to school because they could never teach him what he really wanted to know or what he wanted to become. Only the streets could. Cody came from a family of eight and all of them fended for themselves. They were poor and he was the second youngest child, brought up with a father who he only met twice a year. His Dad gave him spare change from his pockets. This was all Cody remembered of him. Cody loved his mom but always fought with her. Cody would run out slamming the door and heard his mother ram the deadbolt home behind him. “Don’t bother coming home,” she screeched, before her voice faded into a Valium haze. Cody flew down the rickety stairway that led to his family’s tenement. Once on the street, he breathed deeply and adopted the swagger of his older brother Billy, who got killed up in the big house doing time for stabbing a guy in a bar room fight. Cody had walked that way ever since saw his first murdered corpse, in that very stairway two years ago. Cody knew the guy. He was the neighborhood wino who was happy each day and slept on the streets every night. One morning Cody came downstairs for school and the wino was lying in a pool of blood with his throat cut ear to ear and the knife that was used was rammed through the deceased’s right eye. Cody never forgot what he saw. He stood there for five minutes or so and wondered if the Wino was ever going to get up and why someone would do this to him. He was a happy guy who had nothing and didn’t harm anyone. But then…..Cody thought to himself, this is the place he lived in, and this is how life really was, so he went on to school and never spoke about it to anyone. Cody had everything he needed all around him. He learned from everybody he associated with, the tough kids on the street corners; to the gangsters who ran different sections of Boston. Cody aspired to become a juvenile delinquent and succeeded at an early age along with his Partners Johnny and Danny. At that point Cody’s future was carved out for him as he knew it, and the people that knew Cody, would never forget him, the cops, prison officials, prison inmates, judges, attorneys, District Attorney’s and some politicians who still hold office to this very day. Cody is just your average man coming and going as he pleases. Free to roam and do whatever he wants.
