About the Book

Two words-"science project"-inspire dread in Kristin Meese. A good student in the coastal Maine town of Mastport, Kristin plans to survive the project and perhaps earn a decent grade by working with her best friend, Tess. After her science teacher assigns Kristin to be partners with Riley Bennettson, a girl who would rather play lacrosse than do her homework, Kristin figures she is doomed to a terrible project and a bad grade.

To make matters even worse, Kristin and Riley get "Trash" as their project topic. Barely able to talk without arguing, the girls settle into an uneasy partnership when they discover a serious environmental problem in Mastport. When their project stirs up a controversy in town, the girls face a difficult decision. Should they wrap up their work and go their separate ways, or take action together to protect Mastport's environment?
