Fast forwarding to my NOW, hindsight being 20/20, reflecting on my sojourn it became apparent that God’s fingerprints were on every page of my journey. While I never believed in a God, after the passing of my mother and through every trial and misfortune, seeking Him or crying out to Him was never entered my mind. Yet, like the story of Esther in the Bible, where God or His name is never mentioned, likewise has been my story. Retracing my steps back over half a century, connecting the dots of my life, there’s no way I can attribute my sojourn as coincidental or “luck”. Over the years, I have learned that our life experiences consist of disconnected dots, which through time, evolves into connecting dots. It is now apparent that when I was arrested in Korea at the age of nineteen for black marketing ration cards and facing ten years of confinement that my white commanding officer lessening my deserved punishment to field grade non-judicial disciplinary action was because he was just kind-hearted. Or how mysteriously the adjudication paperwork was lost in the system and the disciplinary action was never enforced. It was God turning His heart to favor me. For years before I received Jesus Christ as my Savior, whenever I would tell anyone the story about this incident in Korea, it was a narrative of how “I had gotten over”. The respond was always “Man, you were just lucky!” Soon after I became a Christian and began to study the Bible, I was remembering this event and became perplexed. If God is ALWAYS good surely it must have been the devil who had me burn those papers instead of doing the right thing by signing and returning them? I struggled with this for a while until I read the Scripture that the devil’s only agenda is “to kill, steal and destroy” me. Well, I thought, then it had to be God, but how could it be when HE is always good? For months, I wrestled with this until I heard the Lord say to me in prayer one morning, “What the devil meant for evil, I turned it for your good.”

The one thing all of us have in common is a childhood. The stage in our lives where we are nurtured, taught the basics of life and develop emotions like love, pain and anger. As we mature from childhood to adulthood, depending of which of these emotions impacted us the most as kids, eventually that feeling will affect us over time. The Sojourn From A Black Man To A Godly Man tells the life journey of a young man as he struggles to replicate the love snatched from him when his mother died early in his childhood.
About the Author
Ron Harris, an in-country Vietnam-era Veteran, was born and raised in Norfolk Virginia is currently retired after 32 years as Veteran Employment Representative. He has previously published, The War Within The War. He and his wife, Ruby of 32 years have two daughters, three grandsons and two great-grandsons and live in Philadelphia, PA. Ron Harris was an ex-drug addict until 1994 and for the last twenty-three years has served Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior, ministering to incarcerated men in the Philadelphia Prison System.
