Jerold hated selling popcorn. Orin hated selling popcorn. And, more than either of her brothers, Doris hated selling popcorn.
Doris hated selling popcorn because none of her friends had to work on Saturday night. They all walked through the streets, having fun window shopping and spending their treat money. Doris was sure she had to work and earn money because her family was poorer than everyone else.
Another reason Doris hated standing on the street corner—the busiest corner on Main Street—serving popcorn for a nickel per cone: the teasing she received from bullies in school. It was frightening.
“I want more butter!” “I want a different colored cone!” “I bet you don’t know how to make change for a quarter! Girls with red hair and freckles usually don’t know much!”
But an even bigger reason Doris disliked selling popcorn was her boss, Clarence Howe. He also sold George Foster products by peddling them to the farm ladies in the community. She’d seen him at their house many times. He was fat and bald, and he had a big nose. She thought he was creepy. And one of Howe’s friends, a bachelor named Blaha, was even worse. He enjoyed standing close to the popcorn machine, watching Doris and teasing her.

Doris Hermundstad Liffrig is a lifelong writer, a former newspaper columnist, a calendar creator and has published three books including two volumes of Growing Up Rich in a Poor Family and I'm Strong I Can Make It. A wife, mother of eight and grandmother to fourty-five grand and great-grandchildren, Doris has lived most of her life on the beautiful North Dakota prairies with her husband of 62 years Duane.
