The Prophecy of the Sparrow-- Personal Memoir of a certain Mr. Hopey Whisperwind-- Before I was born, fresh and bleeding from my Mamma’s womb, Grand Maw Lily gave me the name How-Pow-Low-Waka. In the language of my people, it meant one with the heart of a pecan, shining with flames of the Holy One. No one ever called me by that name; everyone simply referred to me as Hopey. Here, in the valley, I was born in the belly of the mountain, where barbed wire fences encased the greenery of ever-aplenty pastures that ran wide alongside deep orange-red spiraling dirt roads. Here, near the river, the story quilt of my tribe was one of a simple tale, woven from a blessing of hope. The strings of its thread were knitted like so… Once, we were a proud and loyal people, strong and wise in our ways. We were the blessing that came from nothing. To outsiders, we were a strange people. Most people did not know about our roots, as our origins were kept deeply hidden in the heart of our clans, given to us only by word of mouth from great grandparents. Some tribes became so secretive that even they had forgotten from whence they came, like the people belonging to the Melungeons of the higher Smoky Mountains of Virginia and the Redbones of South Carolina and Louisiana—but not my people. In my clan, every man, woman and child knew the story of our ancestors as it was told to our ears from birth. This was the tale of my people. These were the words, the inheritance left by my grandmother, from her grandmother’s grandmother, from the first mother.

In his novel, Whisperwind eloquently spans the centuries of time, in order to weave a hauntingly intriguing story of his native people, the Low-Tow-Pee Indians of the North Carolina Mountains. Spoken in two installments, Book One opens with a prologue, titled, “The Prophecy of the Sparrow,” a recounting by Mr. Whisperwind of the sacred promise given to the Low-Tow-Pee before his time. Thereafter, in the beginning chapters, Mr. Whisperwind is living and working in New York City as a magazine journalist with his soon to be fiancée. Unannounced, he is called back home, to be amongst his tribe. Upon his return to his hometown of Cool Ridge, North Carolina, he is summoned to reawaken the fire of healing hands that was upon him as a child, in order to heal his ailing Grandmother, Lily Whisperwind. However, on this occasion, his healing, which the Low-Tow-Pee calls “the Fever,” is unable to cure her. His Grandmother passes away through the night. The next day, to Mr. Whisperwind’s and his tribe’s surprise, his Grandmother’s Will states that Whisperwind is to inherit all of her belongings, the 100 year old home and her tattered journal within it. So then, the true journey begins as Mr. Whisperwind encounters the pages of her writings that speak of old walking spirits, a young love that blooms within a wondrous hidden world of heavenly things, and the praying hearts of a prophecy fulfilled. About the Author
Hopey Whisperwind is the pen name under which the author of "The River Called Silence," writes. The author resides in North Carolina and attended Winthrop University, earning a Baccalaureate of Fine Arts degree.
