About the Book

Shadows of Slaughterhouse Five chronicles the story of 150 American POWs captured in the Battle of the Bulge and eventually caught up in one of the greatest tragedies of World War II – the firebombing of Dresden. This collection includes oral histories, previously unpublished memoirs, and letters from home and from the front that together tell their compelling story in their own words. From simple hometown beginnings through the awakenings of military life in basic training, from assignment on the supposed “quiet zone” in Belgium to the unexpected Battle of the Bulge, from forced march and entrainment to eventual assignment on work details in Dresden – the “Florence of the Elbe,” to the inferno of Dresden on February 13-14, 1945, and the gruesome work details to follow, the individual and collective recollections and reflections of these 150 young men, the men housed in the famed Slaughterhouse Five, reveal a very personal side of war and the struggle for survival. Yet repatriation did not bring closure to this chapter of their young lives for like shadows their memories would forever be part of them.

Today more than sixty years after the firebombing of Dresden, the statue of a steer wishing health and happiness to the citizens of Dresden still stands at the entrance to the public slaughterhouse, a silent witness to the maelstrom that descended upon Dresden and this group of 150 American POWs housed within. Now after more than 60 years of silence for most of these men, Kurt Vonnegut's fellow POWs tell their story of Slaughterhouse Five, in their words as they saw it – dog face young soldiers assured that the war was soon to be over!

About the Author

Ervin Szpek, Jr. is a self proclaimed freelance troubleshooter, jack of all trades but master of none. The book would not have happened had he not taken the fork in the road and became a Mr. Mom to his three children; Jessica, a nurse, Spike (Erv III), a college student, and Sam a high school athlete who aspires to play college football in Florida where it is always warm. He and his wife Donna live in historic Waukesha, WI, "The Saratoga of the West," and home town of Les Paul, Olympians Paul and Morgan Hamm, the Bo Deans and Frank Caliendo, who does the best John Madden impression. Erv plans to finish his basement cave, write a book on the 1,600 American POWs from the Korean War who are buried in a Manchurian hill, and publish a series of short stories from the George Bailey "It's a Wonderful Life" he has lived. Erv also serves as the Chair of Survivors of Stalag IV-B Association in the greater Chicago area. Frank Idzikowski holds a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations and a Master’s Degree in History from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Born and raised in Milwaukee, WI, Frank spent two years in Vietnam with the US Army in Military Intelligence, another year with the Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington DC., and ten years as a former investigator for the Department of Defense. He currently resides in Lynnwood, WA, where he works for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs as a Senior Adjudicator and POW Coordinator. Frank is married to Dr. Heidi M. Szpek, the editor of Shadows of Slaughterhouse Five, and they have two children, Sara, a college student torn between the humanities and nursing, and Alex, a high school student with future plans in architectural drafting.
